This role will be a member of the Company’s Legal Department. The Company’s legal team is approximately 55 strong, including attorneys, paralegals, food safety and regulatory professionals and others. Based primarily in Rosemont, Illinois (a suburb of Chicago), the Company has five regional hubs throughout the United States, in Atlanta, Charlotte, Philadelphia, Phoenix and Seattle. This position will participate in the development and implementation of various food safety and quality policies and procedures to ensure compliance with regulatory, legal and brand requirements. The role will provide technical support for food safety, quality and regulatory compliance to all Distribution Centers, participate in strategic projects supporting the Company’s commitment to continuous improvement in the areas of food safety, quality and regulatory compliance, and provide support on a variety of food safety, quality and regulatory issues that arise from the day-to-day operations of a national food distribution and production business.

Specific accountabilities and responsibilities will include:

  • Assist site leadership to drive continuous improvement in the areas of sanitation, food safety, quality and regulatory compliance and related reporting in those areas.

  • Work with management, sales and customers as needed to understand and reduce product returns and complaints and implement appropriate corrective actions.

  • Participate in the development of food safety and quality policies and procedures including standard operating procedures for distribution centers and transportation.

  • Manage the internal audit function for the assigned sites and ensure effectiveness of the corrective and preventative action process within the framework of the US Foods internal audit program.

  • Support certification and surveillance GFSI audits and work with facilities to implement corrective actions.

  • Maintain communication with certification body for all inquiries related to audit results and appeals.

  • Prepare and evaluate monthly scorecard and review with related facilities, areas and regions.

  • Support regulatory procedures and communications with compliance with USDA, FDA, State and local authorities.

  • Review Food Safety System reassessments, validations and verifications.

  • Review consistency for labeling compliance with USDA/FDA regulations as needed.

  • Assist with regulatory visits and provide responses to non-compliance records.

  • Collaborate with other FSQA staff and other cross-functional teams to find innovative ideas and approaches, with the goal of improving food safety and quality performance.

  • Develop reports regarding compliance with company’s food safety and quality policies and procedures and related regulatory requirements.

  • Develop and present training materials relating to food safety, quality and regulatory matters.

  • Provide support for other food safety and quality programs and initiatives.

  • Develop dashboards to collect and track information relating to Recalls and other food safety and quality areas.

  • Assist with mock recalls and customer requests relating to food safety and quality data and procedures.

  • Research regulatory issues in the areas of food and non-food product safety, quality and labeling.

  • Collaborate with other functions including Supply Chain, Operations, Inventory Control, Finance, Merchandising, Transportation, Category Management, Sales and Field Leadership on various matters impacting food safety, quality and regulatory compliance.

  • Frequent travel (60-80%), including regular overnight travel may be required.

Education/Training:

  • Bachelor’s Degree in food safety, public health, science or equivalent experience required.

Related Experience:

  • Minimum 4-7 years of progressive relevant experience in driving business results in food safety, quality or regulatory compliance required.

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

  • Must possess extensive knowledge and proficiency in the development, use and application of key food safety, quality, regulatory and business metrics, data and performance analysis and techniques used to drive performance, including but not limited to audits, process controls, food safety and sanitation programs, regulatory requirements, etc.

  • Must be self-motivated, able to work independently with limited supervision and possess outstanding initiative and drive for success.

  • Must possess pronounced business acumen, and be able to facilitate effective interaction across all levels, up to and including executive leadership;

  • Intermediate proficiency in Office 365, MS Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint is required.

  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills, including presentation skills for large and small groups, able to explain complex business and regulatory requirements, stats and figures in an impactful manner with clarity and precision, skilled at adjusting message for audience based on experience levels and roles in the organization.

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, skilled at building relationships, must be a team player.

  • Positive attitude, collaborative, proactively jumps into help where needed.

  • Adept at problem solving, assessing risks and thinking outside of the box in order to find the best solution.

  • Works well under pressure, handles high stress situations and manages expedited timelines.

  • Prior experience managing product recalls and/or demonstrated understanding of food safety, quality and regulatory matters are a plus.

  • The experience and track record to be a strong fit with Company’s culture; ability to communicate and operate candidly and with transparency in order to effectively engage and influence diverse teams in a highly collaborative, decentralized environment.

Other Requirements:

  • Candidate must live close to a major airport due to heavy travel requirements.

  • Valid driver’s license and auto insurance, and ability to travel by automobile, airplane and train.
