US Foods Director, Merchandising Strategy - USF Direct in Rosemont, Illinois

The Director of Merchandising, USF Direct, leads the strategy for building-out the endless aisle assortment. The Director will oversee the development and implementation of category strategies aimed at driving sales, achieving market growth and maximizing financial performance. The Director will serve as the subject matter expert on category management strategy, assortment, and will manage a team responsible for the execution of the strategies.

USF Direct is our direct-ship eCommerce channel, providing customers with online access to an endless aisle assortment of items, all shipped quickly with clear tracking information directly to their location.


Design, implement and manage the category strategies and specific action plans to build-out the endless aisle assortment for USF Direct, providing customers with a true one-stop-shop eCommerce platform.

Lead the USF Direct merchandising team and, while working with Category Management, develop and rollout strategies to ensure depth and breadth across both existing categories and new categories.

Define individual, category-specific financial and operational performance targets, providing strong guidance to Merchandising Managers to achieve the defined goals. Continuously evaluate category financial and operational performance against goals and assert corrective strategic action as required. Maintain accountability of category growth and Profit & Loss (P&L).

Define and manage period review process, both internally with Merchandising managers as well as externally with vendor business reviews. Set expectations and targets for vendors in terms of their cost improvements, improved service levels, and speed-to-ship performance.

Develop and implement strategy to build pick-pack-ship activities into US Foods warehouses, enabling internal direct-ship capabilities, expanding USF Direct assortment into new categories. Manage assortment, working with warehouse operations teams to establish and achieve direct-ship performance targets.

Manage with a continuous improvement mindset for all activities. Work across USF Direct team to drive continuous improvement in the vendor onboarding timeline, accelerating the time from identification of vendors to first case sold in eCommerce.

Determine prioritization for assortment expansion, identifying most profitable categories and vendors to expand to, incorporating trends and USF Direct category sales performance in the decision-making.

Lead the effort to identify and develop opportunities to expand exclusive brands (EB) product portfolio through line extensions and innovations in conjunctions with R&D.

Lead the development of promotional activities to grow sales and improve category performance. Review and approve category promotion plans, including major promotional events.

Determine and define category management training requirements, creating and implementing an annual category group training plan.



• Four-year college degree in business or related field required. MBA preferred.

Related Experience:

• Leadership experience and a minimum of 10 years Category Management, vendor management, or equivalent experience required. Experience within the foodservice industry or food manufacturing companies highly desired.


• Must possess the ability to operate successfully in a matrix environment and work effectively across multiple groups and levels.

• The ideal candidate will demonstrate a high degree of motivation, the ability to prioritize and self-direct, strong business acumen and sound interpersonal skills.

• Strong verbal, written and presentation skills required.

• Solid negotiation skills, as well as excellent communication skills required.

• Demonstrated experience and commitment to utilizing the skills of influence, persuasion and negotiation to achieve goals required.

• The successful candidate will have solid quantitative and analytical skills and the ability to work in a team setting, drive team results and support change management within the organization.

• Must be able to provide fact-based recommendations across various levels of management.

• Proficiency required in the use of Microsoft Office, especially Excel and PowerPoint.

• Prior experience managing others required.
