Description

Metra is one of the largest and most complex commuter rail systems in North America, serving Cook, DuPage, Will, Lake, Kane, and McHenry Counties. The agency is linking communities in Northeastern Illinois by providing safe, reliable, and efficient commuter service.

Reporting directly to the Rules Director, the Sr. Rules Examiner will ensure compliance with operating rules and regulations while supporting Metra's goals and objectives. Serves as a Supervisor, Lead Instructor and Examiner in the proper application of the Operating, Maintenance of Way, Safety, Road Worker Protection and Positive Train Control (PTC) Rules to the working environment of the railroad. Support Director of Rules in developing Operating Rules and Procedures for Positive Train Control. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This job is issued a cellular phone. This position is subject to random drug and/or alcohol testing. May perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree preferred. In lieu of degree, any combination of education, experience, and/or technical credentials that equals four (4) years in railroad may be substituted for the required degree.

  • In addition to #1, must have a minimum of six (6) years of railroad experience.

  • Five (5) years of direct or indirect supervisory experience.

  • Minimum of three (3) years of experience administering instructions and/or testing.

  • Must be currently qualified on the General Code of Operating Rules or Maintenance of Way Rules.

  • Must have knowledge of Federal Regulations pertaining to the safe operation of railroads as detailed in Title 49 - Code of Federal Regulations.

  • In depth knowledge of Operating Rules and Employee Timetable, special and emergency operating and equipment instructions and Roadway Worker Protection.

  • Knowledge of training techniques and practices with the ability to design programs and effectively deliver instructions and training in a classroom and field setting.

  • Ability to design, develop, implement, facilitate, evaluate and measure training and development activities.

  • Strong verbal, writing and communication skills.

  • Strong interpersonal skills with an ability to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization and outside agencies.

  • Considerable working knowledge of Microsoft Suite and other PC applications.

  • Ability to remain current on railroad rules and regulations.

  • Must have strong leadership skills to facilitate and organize the activities of others while motivating and fostering teamwork.

  • Must possess a current valid driver's license

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.

  • Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.

  • Must be able to operate a vehicle.

  • Must be willing to travel within and outside of Metra‚Äôs 6-county region.

  • Must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.

Preferences:

  • Train Engineer/Conductor Certification preferred.
