Position Purpose

The Senior Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) Coordinator is responsible for leading the implementation of EHS practices and standards for the moderately EHS complex CBI Chicago, IL facility.

The EHS Coordinator provides leadership and direction in the following areas: implementation of EHS strategy, maintenance and continuous improvement of EHS management systems and shaping of the plant EHS culture with the operational implementation and compliance with EHS management systems and standards being a shared responsibility of all plant leadership. It is expected that the person in this position will spend a significant portion of time in all areas of the facility and interacting with plant and supervisory personnel

The EHS Coordinator is a specialist in moderately complex EHS matters and will lead, assist and advise not only the supervising team in Chicago but also manage the Chicago facility’s moderately complex applicable EHS legal aspects, implement and improve the facility’s EHS systems and share best practices with other CBI EHS personnel.

The EHS coordinator reports directly to the Chicago Plant Manager with a dotted-line reporting relationship to the GEOS & CBI Global EHS Lead.

Principal Accountabilities

40% Plan, coordinate, and lead the implementation of the facility’s moderately complex EHS management systems, policies, procedures, and work instructions;

20% Supervise moderately complex EHS compliance activities, by verifying compliance on paper, computer and in the field; Coordinates and assures appropriate contractor management activities; Coach teammates, at all levels, on the improvement of EHS processes, practices, and methods used in the operations.

10% Develops and coordinates EHS training for facility personnel on moderately complex EHS topics;

10% Coordinates EHS audit compliance and identifies and supports the implementation of required corrective actions; Leads the team in closing gaps in a sustainable way.

10% Ensures EHS data is entered in the corporate EHS management system. Facilitates investigation of incidents and corrective action follow up, and mentors team on opportunities to improve. Reviews data for trending, reports findings to local team and Regional EHS Manager

5% Monitors local EHS regulatory developments and implements appropriate responsive programs; Collaborates with agencies, industry and other Cargill facilities to bring leading practices to the business. Promotes Cargill through involvement in community activities and professional organizations

5% Negotiates moderately complex permit and minor enforcement matters with regulators; interacts with CBI EHS personnel / leadership, Cargill Corporate EHS personnel and CBI Senior Operations and Commercial leadership

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Collaborate with CBI EHS leaders to aligning procedures, exchanging ideas and practices to enable uniform and effective practices


Minimum Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in science, Engineering, EHS or similar field

  • 5 years of experience in EHS in an industrial production/processing environment

  • Strong background managing compliance with OSHA, USEPA and USDOT regulations

  • Experience managing compliance with OSHA Process Safety Management regulations

  • Negotiation experience with regulatory agencies

  • Proficient in use of Microsoft Office applications

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10 years of EHS experience in an industrial production/processing environment

  • Experience managing Facility Response Plans (FRPs)

  • Experience in construction and design safety

  • Incident investigation leadership experience

  • Experience working with a collective bargaining unit workforce

  • USDOT Hazardous Material shipping certification

  • USEPA Hazardous Waste training certification

  • OSHA 10 / 30 hour training certification

  • Experience with Behavior Based Safety and Human & Organizational Performance programs

  • Experience working in the chemical or petroleum field
