Metra’s Engineering department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.

Reporting to the Manager, PTC Engineering, the PTC Systems Test Engineer will focus on Positive Train Control (PTC) systems testing by providing hands on support for all aspects of the design, development, testing, documentation, and deployment of Linux and Windows based servers, mobile and base radios, and related equipment and networks in accordance with industry standards and applicable regulations; read and write test procedures and test plans; and conduct on-site reviews and verify systems tests, including verification and validation of system features and functionality. The position will also assist in the development and review of technical designs, systems integration, maintenance and operations plans; assist in configuration management for PTC systems tests and subsystem devices in a lab environment; and participate in project management functions, attend status meetings, and perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow.

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Information Technology or related discipline.

  • General knowledge of systems design, development, testing, and documentation.

  • General knowledge of Linux and Windows based servers and networks.

  • General knowledge of testing protocols.

  • Good analytical, organizational, attention to detail, and problem solving skills.

  • Good interpersonal skills.

  • Intermediate skill in Microsoft Office.

  • Good verbal and written communication skills.

  • Ability to write test procedures and plans.

  • Ability to work on multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.

  • Must possess hearing/visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.

  • Must be willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region.


Significant course work and/or experience in Linux and Windows based servers.
