The PTC Systems Engineer 2 reports to the Manager, PTC Engineering and will support all aspects of the design, development, testing, documentation, and deployment of the Positive Train Control (PTC) systems in accordance with industry standards and applicable regulations. After deployment of the PTC system, the PTC Systems Engineer II will support the long term operations of the PTC system through troubleshooting and monitoring of the system, as well as assisting with upgrades and enhancements. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. This job is issued a cellular phone. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

  • Must have a computer related Bachelor's degree, Electrical/Electronics Engineering Degree, or in lieu of a degree, a combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four (4) years in the computer, electrical/electronics, engineering, signaling/communications industries with an emphasis on system testing, troubleshooting, and maintenance.

  • In addition to #1, must have five (5) years experience setting up radio, data communications, server rooms and/or supporting a large scale system integration which includes the following areas: network management systems, UNIX, Linux and Microsoft operating systems, network protocols (e.g. TCP/IP, HTTP, SNMP versions 1-3, SNMP MIB) and configuring switching, routing, and firewall devision.

  • Experience required with the system engineering process, including requirements capture and management, system architecture and design, system verification, turnover, and database systems.

  • Must have knowledge of software, computers, operating systems (UNIX, Linux, Microsoft), VHF and UHF radio voice and data communications, information assurance, data security and networking technologies.

  • Ability to work as a team and across organizational boundaries and with subcontractors.

  • Ability to apply analytical decision making principles.

  • Ability to work in a fast paced environment

  • Must possess excellent problem solving, analytical, organizational and communication skills.

  • Must be proficient in Microsoft Office applications.

  • Must possess and maintain a current valid driver's license.

  • Ability to stand, walk, and/or sit, for extended periods of time.

  • Hearing/Visual acuity, far/near, depth perception, field of vision, color vision.

  • Must be able to operate a vehicle.

  • Must be willing to travel within Metra’s 6-county region.

  • Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends.
