The department’s goal is to provide safe, clean and reliable service while maintaining the fleet to the standards of the Federal Railroad Administration, Association of American Railroads, American Public Transit Association and the original equipment manufacturers. The department employs 650 people.

Reporting to the Manager, Mechanical Engineering, the position serves as subject matter expert on the design and development of the airbrake line and the maintenance, overhaul, and testing of 26C and 26L passenger rail car air brake systems at the new 49th Street shop. Provide consultants with information on Metra's airbrake equipment, operations, processes, and requirements for use in designing production line models, rebuild processes, work flow patterns, airbrake shop ergonomics, and production strategies at the new repair shop. Work with Training Department staff in developing on-the-job training programs that prepare skilled crafts working in Metra's airbrake shop to pass certification tests. Evaluate consultant designs to ensure airbrake rebuild and test operations are within budget, meet regulatory and quality standards, and are capable of achieving production demands. Oversee consultants in the selection of tools, equipment, and test benches for the new shop that meet Metra's QA plan and are cost efficient. Participate in monitoring the productivity, efficiency, and quality of the production line and airbrake staff; prepare operations performance metrics; and develop corrective actions for metrics that do not meet targets. Responsible for the safety objectives, goals, and program of the organization ensuring compliance with applicable safety rules and regulations. Incumbents work under both inside and outside environmental conditions under prevailing conditions of heat, cold, rain, and snow. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.
