Metra’s Law Department’s core mission is to provide legal guidance and support to the Board of Directors, the executive team and every other department in the organization. The department focuses on preventing legal issues at every feasible level, as well as defending the agency’s position if issues arise. The Law Department supports Metra’s transportation mission by guiding the agency through the myriad of restrictions and mandates of federal, state and local statutes, regulations, and ordinances. The Department is comprised of three basic divisions: General Corporate/Ethics, Litigation and Risk Management, and Real Estate and Grants.

Reporting to the Supervisor, Claims, the Claims Specialists conduct investigations of personal injury and property damage claims filed against the organization; assess liability and assign financial reserves to claims; negotiate and settle claims; close settled claims by drafting releases and issuing payment to claimants, attorneys, and lien holders; provide documentation and administrative support to Metra defense counsel pertaining to interrogatories and production requests as well as attend depositions, pre-trial conferences, and trials; comply with federal reporting requirements; and perform other related duties as required to meet the needs of the organization. Conduct on-scene investigations of personal injury and property damage claims by obtaining claimant and witness statements, photographing accident sites, measuring and canvassing the area, and performing other activity to assess Metra's liability exposure. Document investigation findings and Metra's liability exposure for all claims; assigning financial reserves to claims based on the liability evaluation, severity of injuries and likely extent of damages; and assess risk transfer potential and tender appropriate claims to third parties for further handling and Metra indemnification. Review medical reports, making corresponding claim reserve changes and track and record medical bill payments. Negotiate and resolve open liability claims, including obtaining corporate approval for settlements and close settled claims by drafting releases and issuing payment to claimants, attorneys, and lien holders. Provide documentation and administrative support to Metra's defense counsel pertaining to interrogatories and production requests. Generally work indoors but may at times be required to work outdoors during investigations and may be exposed to some severe weather conditions. Perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization.

Candidates can expect salary offers that range from the minimum to the mid-point of the salary range. Metra provides full pay ranges so candidate can consider their growth potential.

Metra is a railroad employer subject to the provisions of the Railroad Retirement Tax Act, not the Social Security Administration.


  1. Must possess a Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university or lieu of a degree, any combination of education and experience may be substituted for the required degree that equals four (4) years in claims management.

  2. Must have detailed knowledge of internet investigation sites in order to locate claimants and property.

  3. Must be able to maintain confidentiality of highly sensitive information.

  4. Must have good skills in Microsoft Office Suite applications.

  5. Must have excellent verbal and written communication and analytical skills.

  6. Must be willing to travel within and outside of Metra’s 6-county region.

  7. Must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.

  8. Must maintain a valid driver's license.


  1. Experience working for an insurance carrier.

  2. Experience adjusting personal injury, property and subrogation claims.
