Metra's Engineering department is staffed with over 800 employees who work tirelessly applying technology and engineering principles in the design, construction, operation, and management of our network of infrastructure, facilities, and equipment so that customers can enjoy a safe, comfortable, economical, and dependable transit experience.

Reporting to the Director, Civil/Structural Design, the Civil Engineer I will coordinate design of Metra’s bridge, track, and industrial building construction documents for capital projects; prepare and review project cost estimates and schedules, update contract reports and process capital project invoices; review consultant plans and specifications to assure adherence to Metra's guidelines; facilitate work between consultants and all Metra departments, including city and state agencies through the contract completion; prepare and administer contracts and blanket purchase orders; process Requests for Proposals (RFP) and pay applications from consultants; prepare and update spreadsheets and databases for tracking costs, budgets, and documentation for the Design Division; maintain computerized department databases; and perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the organization. Must be available to work flexible hours in the early morning, late afternoon, evenings, or weekends; must be available on-call 24-hours/day, 7 days/week, 365 days/year, including weekends and holidays.

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering from a school accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET).

  • In addition to #1, must have the ability to read engineering drawings and interpret engineering specifications for both bridges and buildings.

  • Must be proficient in computer aided design and drafting system applications (CADD), preferably MicroStation/Inroad and Microsoft Office Suite with emphasis in Word and Excel.

  • Must have intermediate skills in database system applications.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.

  • Excellent verbal, written communication and organizational skills.
