Johnson Controls Sr. Database Engineer in Chicago, Illinois
POSITION PURPOSE: The DBA will performall activities related to establishing and maintaining a successful database environment to ensure a high level of performance, availability, and reliability.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND BASIC DUTIES:
Daily Responsibilities * Operate as an essential team member of the Enterprise Data Group within the TechOps organization. This will include daily collaborations with System Admins, Network Admins, Production Support, ITHD, and the various App Dev groups.
Establish and implement policies and procedures pertaining to the management, security, maintenance, and use of the database management system.
Set up and maintain documentation and standards.
Perform and advise on database tuning and performance monitoring.
Participate in 24x7 on-call support rotation.
Monitor, tune and respond to system alerts and backup reports.
Ability to identify inefficiencies and automate repetitive tasks.
Work off hours periodically to accommodate maintenance/downtime windows.
Manage multiple concurrent tasks, both administrative and project based.
Collaborate with vendors to manage / improve current systems.
Develop a complete understanding of the ShopperTrak systems to properly understand current capacity, current utilization, and anticipate/avoid future capacity concerns.
Maintain systems at proper level of patching / upgrade path.
- Become a key stakeholder in ShopperTrak’s drive to create a highly successful, technologically diverse database solution. This solution will incorporate Oracle, Mongo, Cassandra, MySQL, Redshift, BigQuery, and an evolving rotation of new database technologies.
EDUCATION/CERTIFICATION: BS in Computer Science or equivalent work experience. Work experience is significantly more important than Education or certificates.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED: 1. 5 years of DBA experienceworking with Oracle databasesystems on Unix. 2. Oracle 11g DBA experiencerequired. 3. Experience and desire to work with alternate Database solutions (MySQL, Mongo, RedShift, HazelCast, Casandra, BigQuery, etc.). 4. Experience with database architecture and logical and physical design required. 5. Experience with PL/SQL programming, shellscripting and query tuningrequired. 6. Database partitioning, patchingand backup experience required. 7. Experience with highly available, redundant systems preferred. 8. Experience with materialized views,data warehousing and businessintelligence preferred. 9. Experience and knowledge of AWS or similar cloud solutions a significant plus. 10. Knowledge of SAN conceptsand physical array designpreferred.
